The quilting ministry at Saint Mark, Quilting for Christ, reached a milestone in September 2009 with the presenting of our 100th prayer quilt. The quilting ministry began in 2007 with baby quilts, which are made by the group and presented to infants baptized at Saint Mark. The quilts have been a gift from the church to infants less than 1 year old and symbolize how we all are pieces but become one in the body of Christ. Later that year a member of the quilt group was injured in a car accident and received a prayer quilt from her grand-daughter’s church. That same year we added prayer quilts to the ministry. Prayer quilts have a different meaning and purpose and are requested by members of Saint Mark. Quilts are given to individuals in need of prayer whether for healing, health, peace or during difficult times in their lives. The completed quilt has ties placed throughout and members of the church tie a knot and say a prayer for the requested person who is physically covered in the prayers of the church. Quilts have warmed people receiving chemotherapy, comforted those facing and recovering from surgery and been a visual reminder to those in stressful times reaffirming that the church remembers and cares. We are frequently asked, “How did you know my favorite color”, or “Soccer is the sport I play year round how did you know to put soccer balls on my quilt”? We hear “The butterflies are so pretty” and “The hummingbirds are beautiful and I still use my quilt when I take a nap”. The simple truth is that God has worked it all out. We had no idea, but God knew. A youth member having heart surgery had her quilt going into the surgery suite till it had to be removed. Her mother then used it to wrap herself during the surgery in the cold waiting room. The quilt was placed back on her daughter immediately after successful surgery. Those of us involved in the quilt ministry cannot believe we have been so blessed by simply sewing for Christ. We have about 17 ladies that participate and average 10-14 that attend the 3rd Saturday of each month for 3 hours. We have a wonderful time with laughs, hugs, prayers and praises. Bonds and friendships have been formed by working together toward a goal of providing comfort to one of God’s children. We are fortunate to have women that do not attend Saint Mark but faithfully come and work to help others. Our lives have been enriched to know them. If you are interested in becoming a part of this ministry I can assure you that you will be received with open arms. Sewing expertise is not necessary, only a willing heart. The ministry is supported in part by the church and with donations of fabric, batting, supplies and monetary gifts. Thank you for your support of this ministry—it has reached far beyond 100 quilts.
