During the season of Lent, we have invited our friends from Saint Paul the Apostle Catholic Church to share with us the cherished Lenten practices that Catholics have observed for centuries.  Somewhere along the way, Protestants lost this rich tradition, and we are happy to declare that Lent isn't just for Catholics anymore!!  We can learn from our fellow Christians what it means to observe Lent in ways that are life changing.  In keeping with our 2010 theme of deepening our faith through spiritual practices, our Wednesday evening programs have been designed to help us observe Lent.

Last week Jane Myers (Director of Faith Formation for the 3-church parish of St. Andrew’s in Clemson, St. Francis in Walhalla and St. Paul’s in Seneca) gave us an introduction to the three traditional Lenten practices - Prayer, Fasting and Almsgiving.  She will return tomorrow, March 3 to go into more depth about the practices.  The schedule below outlines the topics that will take us through March 24.   If you aren’t attending Steve’s book study, I hope you will plan to stay after supper and listen to what Jane and the other speakers have to bring us during the Holy Season of Lent.

Feb. 24: "Introduction to Prayer, Fasting & Almsgiving" with Jane Myers

March 3:  "Discerning Lenten practices" with Jane Myers

March 10: "Deepening the practice of Prayer" with Lynn Sexton

March 17: "Deepening the practice of Almsgiving" with Pat Kelly

March 24: "Deepening the experience of Fasting" with Lynn Sexton

The Life You’ve Always Wanted: Spiritual Disciplines for Ordinary People – The Christian life is about more than being forgiven, more even that making it to heaven.  The heart of Christianity is about transformation – about a God who isn’t just concerned with our “spiritual lives,” but who wants to impact every aspect of living.  It’s realizing that God meets us not in a monastery but on Main Street, and that all of ordinary, daily life has the potential to be lived as if Jesus himself were the one living it.  Salvation without change is not what our faith is about.  If we subscribe to this kind of faith, then we’ve totally missed the boat.  This study will provide the tools needed to allow God’s power to bring about change and growth.

Cost:  $15 per person (includes the cost of the book)

Facilitator:  Steve Morgan

Location:  Room A102
