Like the changing of the calendar following the seasons of nature, we have changing seasons of worship as we follow the church (or liturgical) calendar.
The Liturgical Calendar is divided into two great cycles: The Christmas Cycle and the Easter Cycle.
Each Cycle has three phases:
Christmas – Advent, Christmas, and Epiphany
Easter – Lent, Eastertide, and Pentecost
We mark these seasons with various acts and emphases of worship, including the following:
Advent – A Service of Hanging of the Greens
Christmas – Multiple services of communion on Christmas Eve
Epiphany – A Service of Communion
Lent – An Ash Wednesday Service (on the first day of Lent)
Maundy or Holy Thursday – A Service of Communion (on the Thursday before
Easter Sunday, remember Jesus’ last meal with his disciples before his
crucifixion)
Easter – A Service of special music and celebration
Pentecost – A Service of Communion (celebrating the gift of the Holy Spirit)
