Salkehatchie Summer Service Projects

WHAT IS SALKEHATCHIE SUMMER SERVICE?

Salkehatchie Summer Service is for high school and college age youth drawn primarily from the South Carolina United Methodist Conference. Participants must be at least 14 years old by the beginning of the camp they attend. Adult leaders are present to offer guidance and support.    During the week participants physically improve homes of needy families and reach out to these families and one another in friendship.
Camps will be at various locations around the state. One of those camps is located in Oconee County.  Each camp runs from Saturday to Saturday. Camps are offered from May through July.

2011

Oconee County Salkehatchie 2011

In what will probably go down as one of the hottest weeks in June, ever, the 33 young people in this year’s Oconee County Salkehatchie turned out an amazing amount of work on three projects. On Saturday June 11th they arrived at Saint Mark’s and were assigned lodging in the second floor of the Atrium.

They then toured the three sites and made decisions on their assignments for the week. Early Sunday Morning was the obligatory group photo on the Atrium stairs.
By Monday they were on the sites hard at work.

Site 1 Removing and reinstalling the roof and repairing the back porch. Inside work included work on the bathroom flooring.

Site 2 was a window replacement project. In addition there was a new porch on the back. A lot of work for one week.

Site 3 was a major bathroom repair that involved both structural work and plumbing. There were also repairs to the carport

In the middle of the week the Wednesday night dinner drew a big crowd. The covered dishes were up to the task of filling up 33 big appetites and the rest of us.

There is no doubt that three locations in Oconee County are better for the efforts of these young people. Everyone who witnessed them at work had to be impressed with the love and enthusiasm that they brought to their tasks. Many thanks are due to the adult supervisors, the Saint Mark Smurf’s, and Catherine Wylie, the Salkehatchie Coordinator. All of the people who supported this work received the signed “thank you” picture above.

Twenty of Saint Mark's Youth went to Lexington and Laurens counties in June and July. They were Keith Anderson, John Douglas, Fred Edgerton, Will Edgerton, Ben Harper, Berti Jungnick, Leslie Lamson Scribner, Samuel Ogg, Hayley Pearson, Brittany Pope, Katie Rogers, Kyle Rogers, Matthew Sanders, Gabe Sanders, Jim Walker, Bret Walker, Mike Walker, Taylor Wilson, and Anna Wilson. Donna Poston accompanied the Lexington group. It is always impressive how much work the Salkahatchie groups can accomplish in a few days. Pay particular attention to the gray house the becomes white in the photos below.
