Oconee County Salkehatchie 2010
In what will probably go down as one of the hottest weeks in June, ever, the 30 young people in this year’s Oconee County Salkehatchie turned out an amazing amount of work on four projects. On Saturday June 12th they arrived at Saint Mark’s and were assigned lodging in the second floor of the Atrium.
They then toured the four sites and made decisions on their assignments for the week. Early Sunday Morning was the obligatory group photo on the Atrium stairs.
By Monday they were on the sites hard at work.
Site 1 required sealing on the roof and a coat of paint for the entire house. Inside work included work on the bathroom flooring.

Site 2 was an even larger roofing project since it had to be stripped down to the sheathing, replace several sheets of sheathing, and then lay a new roof. In addition there was a new porch on the back and a number of interior projects. A lot of work for one week.

Site 3 was a mobile home that was painted and received new skirting. This project was not all construction as there were three young children that required clothes and toys.

Site 4 was the third roof project. In addition to new shingles this house got new gutters and downspouts and a number of interior repairs.

In the middle of the week the Wednesday night dinner drew a big crowd. The covered dishes were up to the task of filling up 30 big appetites and the rest of us.
The Salkehatchie’s entertained us with some hymns and then described their projects and gave us a list of items that they needed to complete each site. These lists were over and above the gallons of Gator Aid!
There is no doubt that four locations in Oconee County are better for the efforts of these young people. Everyone who witnessed them at work had to be impressed with the love and enthusiasm that they brought to their tasks. Many thanks are due to the adult supervisors, the Saint Mark Smurf’s, and Catherine Wylie, the Salkehatchie Coordinator. All of the people who supported this work received a signed “thank you” picture from the group.
